Few facts about Kawartha Lakes Ontario
The City of Kawartha Lakes (2006 population 74,561) is a city in east-central Ontario, Canada. Although designated as a "city", it is a largely rural area. The municipality is named for the Kawartha lakes ("Kawartha," shortened from Gaa-waategamaag, means "shining waters" in the Ojibwe language).
Omemee is a community within the City of Kawartha Lakes, Ontario, Canada, formerly known as Victoria County. Omemee is one of the major communities in the Kawartha Lakes, as the proclaimed "city" is vastly rural and has but one major population centre. Omemee was the early childhood home of musician Neil Young and his father, sports writer, Scott Young and the subject of his famous song, Helpless. The community has a population of 1,319 as of the 2001 Census. It is located between the City of Peterborough and the Town of Lindsay. Lindsay is the largest population centre in the City of Kawartha Lakes, and serves as the administrative centre as it did with Victoria County.
Lindsay (2001 population 16,930) is a community on the Scugog River in the Kawartha Lakes region of southern Ontario, Canada, 43 kilometres (27 mi) west of Peterborough. It is the seat of the City of Kawartha Lakes (formerly Victoria County), and the hub for business and commerce in the region.
Fenelon Falls is a village in Ontario, Canada, part of the city of Kawartha Lakes. Known as the "Jewel of the Kawarthas," it has a population of 1,800. Fenelon Falls is home to lock 34 on the Trent-Severn Waterway between Sturgeon Lake and Cameron Lake. It is primarily a tourist town and therefore is most active during the summer season. The main street of Fenelon Falls is called Colborne Street.
Woodville is a community in Kawartha Lakes, Ontario, Canada. It is located west of Lindsay. Known in the late 1800s as Irish Corners, the name of the town was changed to Woodville after the completion of the post office under postmaster John Morrison. In 1871 the Toronto and Nipissing Railway was built though the flourishing settlement and in 1878 Woodville became a police village. Woodville had a town hall, lock-up, grist-mill, two foundries, a cheese factory, planing mill and sash and door factory, a number of dry goods stores, mechanics' shops, and three hotels. It also had its own brick school house, with two teachers, and two churches – one Presbyterian, the other Methodist. Today, the cheese factory, rail station, grist-mill, mechanics shops, and hotels have all been shut down. Woodville now is home to a grocery store, three restaurants, two variety stores, a post office, one gas station, a bank, a curling rink and an arena, two ball diamonds, assorted other shops, and a newer school, first built in 1923.
Bobcaygeon is a community of approximately 2500 people, nestled along the Trent-Severn Waterway in the City of Kawartha Lakes, east-central Ontario, Canada. Bobcaygeon was incorporated as village in 1876, and became known as the "Hub of the Kawarthas". Its recorded name bob-ca-je-wan-unk comes either from the Mississauga Ojibwa word baabaagwaajiwanaang "at the very shallow currents", giishkaabikojiwanaang "at the cliffed cascades" or obaabikojiwanaang "at currented rocky narrows", or from the French beau bocage "beautiful hedged farmland". The first lock in the Trent-Severn Waterway was built in Bobcaygeon in 1833.
